As parents, we know that a child’s education doesn’t stop when they leave the classroom. While enrolling them in a high-quality language program is the best first step, practicing at home is what truly cements those new skills.
But practicing English at home doesn’t have to mean sitting at a desk with textbooks! Young learners absorb information best when they are having fun. Here are five simple, interactive ways to encourage your child to practice their English every day.
1. Make Daily Routines an English “Zone”
You don’t need to speak English 24/7 to make an impact. Pick one daily routine—like eating breakfast, getting dressed, or driving to school—and make it an “English-only” time. Ask simple questions like, “What color is your shirt?” or “Is the apple sweet or sour?” This builds everyday vocabulary without feeling like a lesson.
2. Read Together Every Night
Reading aloud is one of the most powerful tools for language development. Choose age-appropriate storybooks with colorful pictures. Pause to point at objects and ask your child to name them in English. This not only builds their reading habits but also reinforces the phonics and pronunciation skills they learn in class.
3. Screen Time with a Purpose
Kids love cartoons, so why not use them to your advantage? Switch their favorite animated shows to English. Children are incredibly good at picking up context from visual cues, and listening to native or fluent characters helps them develop a natural accent and understand conversational flow.
4. Play “Simon Says” and Other Word Games
Games are the ultimate learning tool. A simple game of “Simon Says” (e.g., “Simon says touch your nose,” “Simon says jump twice”) is excellent for listening comprehension and learning action words. Flashcards, memory games, and even English board games can turn a rainy afternoon into a highly productive learning session.
5. Praise the Effort, Not Just the Perfection
When kids are learning a new language, they will make mistakes—and that’s completely fine! If they use the wrong tense or mispronounce a word, gently repeat the sentence back to them correctly rather than stopping to criticize. Building their confidence is far more important than perfect grammar in the early stages.
